Thanks Jim, my brother Dave is making really good progress. However, I'm a little concerned that now that he's out of the acute rehab facility that he may not be getting the kind of oversite/management on his overall recovery plan that I think is really important right now. From what I've read there a 6 month window of opportunity to get the most benefit from rehab. But I guess having little lulls and bouts of depression along the way is all part of the process. It's hard being 400 miles away and not really in control of his rehab. Just gotta trust that those that are empowered to be responsible for him will do the right thing. I'll tell you, it's really inspiring to read about Saul's recovery (I still haven't read his book, but plan to). When Saul first contacted me shortly after Dav's accident and I heard his story, I didn't really think Dave would have a chance at the same kind of recovery. I'm much more hopeful now. It's a long process though. Thanks for your encouragement.

Met him at Soldier Ride in Key West. I'm a Master Chief in the Coast Guard and helped out with the ride. My wife works for Margaritaville and we had a very good time with Saul. Have read Saul's (and your) story. Proud to know him and work to gether with him for a cause. You have a special family and we admire what you do. WE too try to give back as much as we can. WE advertise Raisin Hope and spread Saul's story where we can. Sorry the ride was cancelled - we would love to do it one year. The PIerce Family are hard fast Raisin fans - regardless of his endeavors... if you ever get to New Orleans look us up!!!

Liam is definitely quite the renaissance guy. He has walked on all of us, too....we all hate to admit that we feel better after, but it really works! I would love to come and visit at some point in the future. School has just started here, so life is on hyperspeed....getting everything set up :-)

Hi Jim!
Thanks for the message!
Those where the days, when both your son and I races as a pros. It was nice. I have great memories. I stopped riding as proffesional in 2007. I moved back to Norway and have started a quite different life. I have a firm with other formes athletes and we helt people, companies and their employees to get in shape trough a team building consept we have created. Besides that I work with cycling for a Norwegian tv channel and study at the UNI. I will get married in two weeks. Soul know with who:-)
I still ride my bike. But only for fun and to stay in shape. I raced with Thor yeasterday in a show race here i Norway. He has had a great season and is really strong. I think it was good for him to change team.
Say hi to Saul and your wife from me!
We stay in touch!
Kind regards Mads!

Hi Jim,
Yes, I just finished Tour de Life the other day. I really enjoyed it as it was very close to the same experience I had. I was not in a pro level race however, i was with one of my riding partners who told me we were going between 35 - 40 mph setting up for a sprint to the town sign. I was on his wheel and the next thing I knew I was looking at the hospital ceiling. My friend assures me I didn't hit his wheel. The book brought me to tears several times as i can relate to some of the experience Saul had. I am grateful to be back on my bike. I've never returned to the same ability level or fitness as before, however, I still love riding and look forward to being in lead groups on group rides. My left foot is still numb from a buldging disc. However, In the hospital my whole left side from the hip down was paralized. I am very interested in riding in the Raisin Hope ride with my son
who is starting to race some himself. This year might be out because of a wedding. I still might try to make it anyway. Thanks for the feedback. All the best to you and yours,
Mike

Hi Jim,
Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to come to the Raisin Hope 2009 ride. I really had planned to and still wish I could. I have Chronic Kidney Disease and it is getting worse. The national conference of the American Association of Kidney Patients is being held at the same time in Denver. I feel that it is very important for me to go to this. I need to learn all that I can to stay off of Dialysis as long as possible.
So many good things seem to be happening in Saul's life. You must be very happy for him and proud of him. He and Dianne seem to have a wonderful relationship. I'm happy for them.

Belated Happy Father's Day to you! Hope things are going well for you! We're still making a lot of progress, Jo is diligent with the vision therapy - and slowly getting back on the bike. She's got the swimming and running down!

David and Johanna Vied

Hi Jim,
We'd like to come to Dalton for the Raisin Hope ride. Do you have recommendations of a good plce in the Chattanooga/Dalton area where Doug might be able to rent a good Road Bike? He currently rides a Trek Madone 6.2 Project One Road Bike.
Thanks, Anne Smith

Jim, It's great to get such a nice welcome. David talked about his conversation with you over and over. It was a great comfort to him and to me as well. We're planning on coming out in Sept. for the ride and hope to meet you then. I'm sure we'll be in touch before then. Things continue to improve but never as fast as you want them to. I'm starting to ride outdoors again, with David. My vision must be getting better, because I think I can see his white knuckles! Regards, Johanne

Jim:

So here we are at 6 months post accident. Johanne has been back at work for the last 4 months or so (she's a Paralegal), and is just now beginning to drive. We're on the Computrainer and swimming regularly. And, starting just now to ride outside. She has visual-spatial issues - her biggest issue at this point and vision therapy sessions have been wonderful. So, bottom-line, we are unbelievably fortunately. She's 95% there and we're fighting to get all of it back - which her Neurologist believes will happen over the balance of this year. So, one question specifically for you - how did you - do you - cope Saul's desire to bike race/race triathlons? Opinions differ on the potential re-injury outcome - I read in Saul's book that his Docs said that after a year there was no addl' injury risk than from before the injury. But, our Neurologist of course says no guarantees. So, I'm dealing with the fact that I'm spending every bit of effort to get her back riding well again, and wondering how I'm going to deal with the reality of her riding in a paceline again. Would definitely appreciate your thoughts.

One more thing - we promised pic to Saul, but Jo wore her Raisin Hope long sleeve jersey out for our ride last weekend. And, I've been wearing mine proudly on my rides.

All the best ,

David Vied

Jim,
Just a quick "hello" from someone that has recently sustained a head injury, although not as severe as Saul's. I just finished the book, "Tour de Life" and was moved to tears as it described the experiences that many of us, our families, and our loved ones are living through every day. Like you, there isn't a thing that I would not do for my children. Now I am finding that the same goes for what my children will do for me.

I am sure that your love, devotion, and fatherly guidance have played a huge part in Saul's miraculous recovery.

I am so thankfull for parents that stand by with love and hope for their children. One of my parents was by me bedside every moment for almost 3 months. I think it gives us a glimps of how much our father in heaven loves us. I'm reading your experience in Saul's book right now and it brings back some memories of mine minus the language barrier. The book was given to my wife while I was in a coma, and it also gave her a lot of help and hope for recovery.

David, I am ordering more jerseys. It will take about 12 weeks before they arrive. When they do, I will post them on the web site and information on how you can get one.

Thanks,
