Happy Mother's Day!

"Your work is to discover your world and then with all your heart give yourself to it."

Buddha.

"For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin.....
But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life."

"I have learned two lessons in my life: first, there are no sufficient literary, psychological, or historical answers to human tragedy, only moral ones. Second, just as despair can come to one another only from other human beings, hope, too, can be given to one only by other human beings."

Elie Wiesel

Let's continue to be there for each other. You all seem to have an infinite ability to do so. Every caregiver that I know is an amazing person. As a survivor, I say "thank you" from all of us.

This week was a real emotional rollercoaster. I keep bringing myself down comparing myself to myself ("old me" to the "new me"). But my family, friends, and my best friend, my wife Mary Ann, made me see the good in what was happening and made me focus on the positive: that my improvement continues every day.

On a more positive note, I took my bike on a local business trip and rode every day! This was a lot better than logging miles on a trainer. Watch for some news about my first race, coming up in July!

Enjoy the weekend. I am up early getting ready to do some local hills and a long ride.

Happy Monday everyone. I had some good hill workouts this weekend. I was able to squeeze in 50 plus miles on Saturday morning with some friends and 4,500 feet of climbing. I still have a ways to go. Persistence and determination. I will get my endurance back!

“Persistence is the twin sister of excellence. One is a matter of quality; the other, a matter of time.”
-Anonymous

“Permanence, perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstacles, discouragement, and impossibilities: It is this, that in all things distinguishes the strong soul from the weak.”
-Thomas Carlyle

Be strong this week! Be great! Don't unclip. Never stop pedaling. Give it everything! Gas it!

Hi everyone: One of the things I find difficult after my injury is multi-tasking. You know, being involved with many things at the same time. Well, here are some thoughts about having focus. Forget about doing many things at once. Be great at doing one thing at a time!

"The shorter way to do many things is to do only one thing at a time."
-Mozart

"Do not let what you can't do interfere with what you can do."
-John Wooden, AKA, The Wizard of Westwood

"Spesso chi non fa troppo poco."
("Often he who does too much does too little")
-Italian proverb

Be focused. Do one great thing today! Exceed expectations!

This week was another one filled with ups and downs. I keep wanting to compare the "new me" to the "old me". I keep asking myself, "is the performance difference due to the injury or just due to the fact that I lost several months of training?" I rode with the local bike club on Saturday morning. While I rode with the fast guys, I am now relegated to the back of the pack that rides off the front.

I know that it's easy to place the blame on my injury, but I have decided to take charge of things including my recovery. Look at the positive; even though I was not at the front of the group, I wasn't the last one to finish either.

But through the highs and the lows, the bike still has magical powers. It's an old friend at times, and a mean taskmaster at others. It has its own spirit and calls me back for more. I am weak, so I follow.

Today's thoughts are about the bike.

"Cycle tracks will abound in Utopia."
-H.G. Wells

+Think of bicycles as rideable art that can just about save the world."
-Grant Petersen

"Consider a man riding a bicycle. Whoever he is, we can say three things about him. We know he got on the bicycle and started to move. We know that at some point he will stop and get off. Most important of all, we know that if at any point between the beginning and the end of his journey he stops moving and does not get off the bicycle he will fall off it. That is a metaphor for the journey through life of any living thing, and I think of any society of living things."

Enjoy your weekend.

And you also, David. Today started off GREAT. I was up on the bike at 6 AM to do a group ride with several team members. I rode 25 miles to meet with a friend only to find out she could not join us. So, I did about 60 miles at a decent clip. A lot more fun than my disappointing Saturday group ride.

Today I hung with the fast guys for most of the ride. Some fast sprints and several pulls at the front.

My Memorial Day weekend got cut short by travel for work. I was on a plane traveling to Atlanta (groan!) I am in Norcross GA this week.

I plan to visit some old friends and maybe have dinner with my brother who lives in the area.

Have a great week!

Some more thoughts to ponder...

"Without faith a man can do nothing; with it all things are possible."
-Sir William Osler

-Robert Schuller

-Abraham Maslow

Have faith. Believe. Make it happen.
