I hope everyone had a good weekend. Mine was a mixed bag. I rode hard both days but felt best yesterday. I had the blues today but snapped out of it when I saw my grandson christened this afternoon.

"The only way to find the limits of the possible is by going beyond them to the impossible."

Arthur C. Clarke

"If you don’t fall off now and then, you don’t know how fast you can go."

Dave Aldana, motorcycle racer. Aldana's original words are hard to come by. This quote morphed into "You'll never know how fast you can go until you fall down", which is the most popular version. Dave Aldana appeared in Bruce Brown's movie, "On Any Sunday". As a British (motor)bike enthusiast, this movie is in my collection.

BTW, my first "geared" bicycle that I received when I was about 10 or so was a Rudge, also from England. Whitworth fasteners and all.

I enjoy the thought of the day so much. Thank you, Yvonne

Yvonne,

Thanks so much. Early in my recovery, I questioned everything that had happened to me. It seemed that I was down every day. While I have no recollection of the conversations, I lamented about my current situation to my neuropsychologist every day. I'd exclaim that "I am an athlete, I am a competitor". He would snap me back to my reality, saying, "That was then, this is now". I had to choose: I could live a life of self-pity and doubt or keep moving forward, growing, healing, and testing myself. I chose the latter. There is a saying in endurance racing that usually comes into play when you are so dog-tired that you have to walk up hills that you previously rode with ease:

"Any forward progress is better than no progress at all." (Today's thought!)

It takes a lot more than this to slow me down. If it means that my teammates need me to ride at the front, that is where I will stay. I'll pull them all up the hills as needed, or at least give it everything I have.

Thanks again!

Randy

Today's though is actually a riddle. See if you can figure it out.

Ten birds were sitting on a telephone wire during one of the most bitter winter days in Chicago. Nine were thinking about flying south for the duration of the winter. One was content where she was. Later that afternoon all of the birds had flown away.

How many flew south?

10 flew south.

Hi Anne:

Hmmm. Are you sure? Why ten birds and not nine, or even some other number of birds? Hint: nine were "thinking" about flying south.

Happy wednesday for you as well.

I'm not sure about it, but because they were just "thinking" about flying south they might just as well have flown somewhere else. I think there's not enough information to know 100% sure where they went, but your hint made me think they didn't fly south.

Tom:

You got it. "Thinking" about doing something and actually "doing" it are not the same. Make things happen! Plan your work and then work your plan.

My father-in law is a do-er. He often chastised my indecision early in my career by saying "Do something, even if it's wrong!"

Along those same lines, my dad used to tell me that "You only have to be right 51% of the time to be considered successful."

Mistakes happen. Learn from them. Do not suffer from "analysis paralysis". Do it! You can make it happen!

So the answer to the riddle is that there is no right answer. From the data provided you cannot tell how many birds, if any, flew south.

Keep pedaling. Don't unclip.

And don't be afrait to fall a few times.
