Hi everyone.
I just got back from the race. I placed first in my class with eight laps. That sounds a lot more impressive than it really is since I was the only person in my class. To make the win official, all I needed to do was complete one lap. But I kept going. So, basically, I did seven more laps than I needed to do to win.
Since several of you have pledged contributions based on how many laps I could complete, I was really motivated to keep on going. And Stephanie's poster with pictures and well-wishes from all of you made sure of that. I'd touch it just before I got back on the bike to do another lap.
The stats:
8 laps
90 miles
12,000 feet of climbing
One crash. On lap 3, I bobbled on a really rocky, technical section and went over the bars. No big deal, I got a few bumps and scrapes and found out where the best line was NOT.
Since I had First place pretty well sewn up, I was the Good Samaritan on the course. I stopped to help a fellow rider mend a broken chain, fixed a few flats, and helped one rider clear a chain that was stuck between his rear cassette and spokes. I stopped several times on each lap so as not to impede the elite riders and the faster teams. I was interviewed on the course at about 11 PM and once before the race by a local TV station. I told Saul's story and his involvement with Raisin Hope to anyone that would listen.
I'll post a few more pics and a video.
You see, we can accomplish anything that we set our minds to.
Determination. Self-confidence. Persistence.
Never quit. No matter how hard the task may seem.
